Children CrossingVery shortly thousands of kids will be going back to school and many will be starting school for the first time. This is a tricky and emotional time for everyone and as accidents can happen all too easily. I’ve put together a little list of things to keep in mind to help keep all out beautiful children safe.
1. Make sure you are fully aware of a 40km/h zones in your area and watch your speed.
2. When dropping the kids off or picking them up try to do it from the school side of the road.
3. If you do need to park on the opposite side, get out and walk the kids into and out of school.
4. Make sure children only cross the road at signed designated crossing areas.
5. Remember not to park close to these areas as you’ll reduce visibility for other motorists in seeing children crossing.
6. Have all property named but not so that a stranger could read it, say on a backpack.
7. Go over stranger danger with your child, what are they to do if a stranger approaches them?
8. Check school policy regarding food / lunches. Many no longer allow peanut products due to allergy concerns.
9. If your child requires medication, make sure it is labeled correctly and/ or given into the school nurse.
10. Watch and talk with your kids about their return to school, are they settling in, or are there other issues that need discussion.
Making sure our children are educated in the happiest safest way possible is everyone’s responsibility. Please add any other points you feel I’ve missed in the comments.
Yours Safely
Glenys
Hi Glenys,
Many of the schools in the Brisbane area have undertaken the Active School Travel program offered by the Brisbane City Council. This is an excellent program that tries to establish healthy and active ways of getting to and from school like walking and cycling, and also promotes use of public transport and car pooling. The program also emphasises travel safety. It may be worthwhile for parents of new school kids, or those who have recently moved to the area, to check if their school is part of the Active School Travel program and if they have a Walking School Bus or bicycle club. Like most things, these program rely on volunteers eg Walk Leaders for the Walking Bus, so parents might also like to check how they can get involved in supporting the program.

Active School Travel champion.
Great Idea! anything to promote health and safety for school kids is worth looking into.
