This is an excellent program that tries to establish healthy and active ways of getting to and from school like walking and cycling, and also promotes use of public transport and car pooling. The program also emphasises travel safety. It may be worthwhile for parents of new school kids, or those who have recently moved to the area, to check if their school is part of the Active School Travel program and if they have a Walking School Bus or bicycle club. Like most things, these program rely on volunteers eg Walk Leaders for the Walking Bus, so parents might also like to check how they can get involved in supporting the program.
