Toddlers Get Messy

It was one of those mornings when you wake up, hear the kids fighting over some silly thing and decide you really ought to just roll over and go back to sleep. But you can’t because the kids now need breakfast etc. Then it hits you….. this is a morning you just have to get out of the house. After a quick search on the net I found a craft class for the kids and I to try out in Graceville.

Bim Bam Boom, I discovered is firstly a toy shop. You pass through the shop to the craft area at the back. It is just the right size for a dozen kids to enjoy getting messy. I was a little concerned that this activity wouldn’t go to well due to the fact that neither of my boys have either the patience nor any real interest in doing much in the way of painting, sticking, cutting etc. I didn’t need to worry.

We started with some play dough to enjoy whist waiting for the other kids to arrive. Then the kids put on some painting smocks and did a painting by dropping some paint on paper. The paper was then folded in halve and the kids enjoyed squishing the paint to make a symmetrical pattern.

Then we all made a lion face out of a paper plate strips of paper, glue, glitter and some cut out eyes and a nose. I think they look fantastic. As soon as the kids started to fuss about being finished, the next activity was started. The kids were given a good squirt of shaving cream and a dollop of paint and encouraged to enjoy playing in it, squishing it to make patterns with the paint, mix it in, and just enjoy the gooey, squishy fun of it all.

To finish Sara read a story which we unfortunately missed the start of because we needed a trip to the toilet (of course). It was a lion story which nicely tied in with the lion craft we did earlier. The way Sara managed to keep these kids busy and engaged was fantastic. We all know that keeping toddlers and preschoolers focused on any activity for any length of time is a struggle. Well I really felt we got value for money and of course had a lovely morning out.

Bim Bam Boom

The classes they run are “Toddlers Get Messy” 2-4 years –“ Mini Boomers” 4-6 years – and “Boomers” 6 years +. The cost is $12 per child which for me means it’s not an activity I’d be doing regularly. However it is a really good option for an outing if I’m looking for something more than a park or playcentre. To learn more visit the Bim Bam Boom website or the Calendar at Brisbane Child for class times.

Have a nice day,

  1. Well, they do get themselves into trouble don’t they…I left my husband in charge of my 1.5 yr old. In this time the boy found the bathroom and my make up cupboard. He got into my mascara and painted his face with it, including his tongue!! I got to see the photo’s when I go home and all had been confessed.

  2. My toddler does love to line up the saucepans like a drum kit and do his “Singing in the kitchen, banging on the pots and pans” In fact we have had to replace a number of wooden spoons as they have split as have been used with such enthusiasm. Perhaps a pastry brush may be an option next time !
