Review: Katie Koala Saves the Day, Brisbane Council Library Holiday Show

Katie Koala

This is the third and last show presented for kids by the Brisbane City Council Libraries for this school holidays. Unlike the other two puppet pantomimes, this is more of an interactive musical show.

Firstly we met Darcy a bush musician that uses a lot of exaggerated facial expressions and gestures to get the kids laughing. He warms everyone up with a lot of fuss over where he is going to place his guitar stand. He introduces himself and gets to work teaching the kids some actions to a song.

After the song Katie arrives and there is a lot of fuss about “finding” her. Funny isn’t it how kids never get tired of that! Katie doesn’t talk but uses gestures to indicate that she loves her books and the library. She then receives a letter that tells her she’s needed to go back home and figure out what has happened to all the gum leaves.

More songs and dancing happen with a bit of narrative in the middle. (Darcy did lose his crowd for a bit there) Then Katie comes back and explains that it was the wind that blew off the leaves and she knew this because she found the answer in the book.

It’s a good little show, the kids all love a large costume character; in fact I was asked constantly if we would be able to give Katie a cuddle. Yes, we got our quick cuddle in the end.

Have a look at my other reviews for the library pantomimes, Eric the Red and The Tale of Bob the Bilby. If you’re wondering how I’d rate them then:

1. The tale of Bob the Bilby
2. Katie Koala Saves the Day
3. Eric the Red

Warmest,
Glenys
