The Tale of Bob the Bilby

The kids and I had already had a huge day shopping when we went to see The Tale of Bob the Bilby at the West End Library. I had my doubts that they’d be able to handle sitting still and behaving after already being out most of the day. But to my surprise they did just fine and I’m sure it’s because this show was so engaging.

Let me describe the set up. The stage is a small pointy roofed fold-up tent with a hole cut out for the puppets to do their thing from. My first thought was that it looked quite cheap and a bit tacky, my second was how ingenious! The whole set would fold away to nothing and weigh just as much.  Clever..

From start to finish this puppet show involved talking with the kids and getting them involved. Yes to the point of “LOOK BEHIND YOU!!” The audience was clearly having a great time.

The show involves 5 puppets. 2 of which are wacky gremlin creatures with ears that wiggle. Then there is a villain, a bilby, and a hair/rabbit. The puppeteering was very good, ok I’ve seen better, It’s not the Muppet show by any stretch but it was still very good. The villain has a mannerism that reminds me very much of Fozzie Bear.

I can’t tell you all about the story line because we had to leave for a while for a toilet visit. Are you’re kids like mine? You’ll ask them 10 times if they need to go. They say they don’t, and then 5 minutes later release an amount that’d rival opening the Wivenhoe Dam flood gates. Honestly..

The Villians

The story involves the villain wanting to capture the bilby because it’s rare and then sell it stuffed on Ebay. The villains’ sidekick the hair comes good in the end and sets it free.

The kids had a good time, most of the adults found a giggle or two and I think it’s worth a look.
Check the Brisbane Council library website for locations and times this school holidays.

Kind Regards
